Maestro Étienne RAMBOATIANA (1930-2007) : "CONCERTO FOR 40 GUITARS".

The Maestro Étienne RAMBOATIANA came from the village of Ankadivoribe Atsimo, in the Kingdom of Imerina, Central Highlands of Madagascar. He was a Professor of Music, Church Organist, Poet, Arts Painter, Musician Concertist, and a National Composer who composed on different styles of Music, such as Classical music, Traditional music, Sacred Music, Jazz Music, and Modern Music. 

He worked as Musician and Composer who visited many countries in the five continents (America, Africa, Europe, Asia, ...) In 1958-1965.

He composed more than 100 masterpieces of Music for Guitar, Valiha, Flute, Violon, Cello, Vocal, Basson, Saxophone, Xylophone, Doublebass, Percussions, Piano, Organ,  and many others,

 with different numbers of Music instruments, such as Solo, Duo, Trio, Quatuor, Chamber Music, Choir and Orchestra, Orchestra, and Grand Orchestra.

He also composed two  "Concertos for Guitar and Orchestra". Moreover, he composed a "Concerto for 40 Guitars" which was a "première mondiale" because it was the first time in the History of Music, especially in the History of the Guitar that there were 40 Guitar players who performed together with a Music for 40 Guitars in the World (Antananarivo, 1979). 

 We are among his 40 disciples who performed the first "Orchestra for 40 Guitars" in the world (1978). And I was the first Classical Guitarist who was seated to his left on the picture. We did six months of musical rehearsals, one rehearsal of three hours per week, before the first performance of this first "Concerto for 40 Guitars" in the world and this musical concert was at the global top level.

Among his 40 disciples who performed this first "Orchestra for 40 Guitars" in the world, except Johns Rajohnson, Doné Andriambaliha and Harilala Razafindranaivo, were César R., Mamisoa R., Dr. Bruno Rasoamanana, Toby Ramaholimihaso, Pascal Rakotobe, Gérard Randrianarivony, Coco Randriananja, Tianome Razakamanantsoa, Dr. Saholy Ranaivoarivelo, Michelle Radilofe, Nicole Radilofe, Sylvie Holisoa Rakotovao, Rachel Ramboatiana, Annie Ravelo Hoerson, Hery Rabarijohn, Hervé Rakotoarivony, Dr. Ndriana Rabarioelina, Nirina Tremarisoa Rakotomalala, Haga Ravelojaona, Dany Rajonhson, Lalasoa Hericole, Lala Perlin Andrianirina, Urbain Randria, Gabin Randria, Dimbitsiferana Hery Ravoniandro, and other friends.

And he participated to many Festivals, such as an "International Festival of Classical Guitar" with Maria Luisa Anido (Argentina), Gérard François (Mauritius), and Patrick Sida (La Réunion).

A Musical Concert entitled "Etienne Ramboatiana : A Great Maestro of the Music" to pay tribute to him was organised by the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Madagascar (NGO-CNSMM) under the direction of Ndriana Rabarioelina, at the Madagascar Hilton, Antananarivo, 1997.

At the end, Maestro Etienne RAMBOATIANA was among the Great Composers of the 20th Century in the world, like Isaac Albéniz, Enrique Granados, and Heitor Villa-Lobos.

The ultimate object of the CNSMM Consevatory is to glorify the Lord Zanahary, the Creator of the Universe.


2. THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE CNSMM CONSERVATORY :

The main objective of the CNSMM is the shining of the musical culture of Madagascar and at the same time the universal music of which it is a part.

    Apprenti joueur de flûtes obliques (nay, nahr, etc.) je suis vivement intéressé par le jeu de la sodina malgache !
    Je serai à Madagascar en décembre et je viens par ce message à la recherche d'informations de joueurs ;
    mon intérêt étant plus porté vers la musique spontanée que la musique académique.
    Par avance merci si vous avez ne serais-qu'un début de piste de recherche.
    Je ne suis pas du tout dans l'optique collectionneur : j'ai d’ailleurs déjà fabriqué ma propre sodina avec le Bambou de mon jardin à Paris.

ULTIME OBJET:
Le CONSERVATOIRE NATIONAL SUPERIEUR DE MUSIQUE DE MADAGASCAR (ONG-CNSMM) a pour ultime objet de rendre Gloire au Seigneur Zanahary, Andriamanitra Andriananahary, le Créateur de l'Univers.


PRINCIPAL OBJECTIF:
Il a pour principal objectif le rayonnement régional et mondial de la culture musicale de Madagascar, et par la même occasion de la musique universelle dont elle fait partie.


MISSION:
Pour réaliser ses objectifs, le Conservatoire CNSMM s'est donné pour mission:
- la contribution à la sauvegarde, la préservation, la conservation et la valorisation de l'héritage culturel et du patrimoine musical de Madagascar et de toutes les disciplines y afférentes,
- La recherche: favoriser les recherches scientifiques concernant la musique de Madagascar et les disciplines y afférentes.
- l'appui et le développement d'activités culturelle, économique et sociale liées à la musique.
- la coopération et les échanges culturels et scientifiques internationaux,
- la promotion et la diffusion de musique de haute qualité.


STRATEGIES:
- La conservation: sauvegarder et conserver l'héritage et le patrimoine musical de Madagascar qui risque de disparaître.
- la formation: contribuer à la formation des formateurs et professionnels de haut niveau.
- la transmission de la culture musicale par tous les moyens et techniques disponibles.
- la diffusion: valoriser et diffuser la culture musicale au niveau mondial.

HISTORY OF THE CLASSICAL MUSIC IN MADAGASCAR

The first inhabitants of Madagascar had their autochtone music with very different styles and more than 350 traditional music instruments since millenaries.


1) The King RADAMA 1 (1810-1828) introduced the Harmonium and the Solfa for the education and the development of his people via the Welsh Protestant missionnaries.


2) The King RADAMA II (1861-1863), player of the Valiha traditional music instrument, introduced the first Piano and the Solfege via the French Jean Laborde and the Rev. Father Marc Finaz. This king was a gifted musician, pianist, who composed some masterpieces, such as "Mokatejy" (My Cottage) or "Rahodra" (My Wood), "Kalokalon-dRadama" (Romance of Radama), "Arahaba" (Bonjour). He introduced also other music instruments, such as the Clarinet and the Cornet à piston. Then, royal hymns were composed.


3) The Queens RASOHERINA (1863-1868), RANAVALONA II (1868-1883) and RANAVALONA III (1883-1896) were melomanes of sacred music and religious music.


4) The Queen RANAVALONA II (1868-1883) inaugurated the Royal Temple of Anatirova Antananarivo on July 20th, 1869. Then, she introduced the first Grand Orgue à Tuyaux in Madagascar for this Royal Temple.


5) The Queen RANAVALONA III (1883-1896) introduced other music instruments, such as the Guitar, the Alto, the Flûte traversière and the Mandoline.


6) At the time of the Queen RANAVALONA III (1883-1896), the Pastor JOSEFA ANDRIANAIVORAVELONA (1835-1897), Chapelain of the Royal Temple, was a musician and a composer. Then, the Professor SAMUEL RATANY (1856-1854), who educated the children and the youngs at the Royal Palace, was also a musician and a composer. After that, RAMBOATIANA, Chief of musicians at the Royal Palace, composed also hymns and other musics.


7) The Prince Dr. JOSEPH RASAMIMANANA, 12Hrs (1867-1935), Laureate of the Faculté de Médecine de Lyon (1891), Surgeon stagiaire from Val-de-Grâce in Paris, Professor at the Royal Academy of Medicine, first Malagasy scientific Outstanding Scholar, musician, was specialist of the traditional music instrument called Valihan' Andriana, and he became a Classical Pianist. He introduced Classical Vals for Piano after his return from Europe to Madagascar.


8) A Malagasy Military Orchestra from Madagascar performed Music with perfection at the Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1900. Then, a group of traditional musicians from Madagascar performed Traditional Music at this Exposition. After that, partitions for Classical Piano were published from original music of Madagascar in France.


9) Then, the musician FELIX RASOANAIVO,  Classical Pianist, Composer, was among the first promotion and Laureate of the Conservatoire National de Musique de Montpellier in 1900's. Moreover, he published some musical partitions of his compositions for Classical Piano in France.


10) After that, the musician GILBERT LALAO RAONY, earned the 2nd Prix de Flûte traversière of the Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris in 1906.


11) The musician, pianist and composer NORBERT RAHARISOA (1913-1961), former student of the Conservatoire National de Musique de Paris, composed the future National Anthem "Ry Tanindrazanay Malala" in 1946. Then, he emigrated in Slovenia where the Symphonic Orchestra of the Radio in Slovenia perfomed someones of his compositions.


12) The multi-instrumentist musician GILLES RAMIARISON, Conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Antananarivo, who composed 300 songs, hymns and music, such as the famous "Zanahary O, Tahio ny Tanindrazanay", was a former musician of the National Conservatory of Music in Paris (2ème Prix de Saxophone et Professorat de Musique) in 1960-1962...
